Sunshine Coast’s Next Chapter: Airport Upgrades and The Wave Transit Project

Sunshine Coast’s Next Chapter: Airport Upgrades and The Wave Transit Project

The Sunshine Coast continues to evolve, and two recent infrastructure updates highlight the region’s growing momentum: the expansion of Sunshine Coast Airport’s retail and dining precinct and the early works beginning on The Wave transit corridor.

Both projects reflect a shared vision for a more connected, accessible, and vibrant Sunshine Coast.

A Major Investment in the Sunshine Coast Airport Experience

The Sunshine Coast Airport has announced its largest-ever investment in retail, food, and beverage offerings, marking an exciting step forward for both travelers and the local economy.

In partnership with global travel retail operator Lagardère AWPL, the airport will significantly expand its commercial space inside the terminal. The redevelopment will introduce a range of new food and retail concepts designed to enhance the passenger experience while showcasing the best of the Sunshine Coast.

Planned additions include:

  • A new all-day dining venue highlighting local produce
  • A dedicated coffee concept for travelers on the go
  • A casual burger and beer outlet
  • A self-serve dessert bar
  • Expanded retail offerings for travel essentials and lifestyle products

These upgrades will be delivered in stages, with completion expected by late 2027.

Beyond improving convenience for travelers, the investment aims to celebrate local producers and create opportunities for regional businesses to be featured in the airport environment. As passenger numbers continue to grow, this transformation ensures the airport reflects the quality and character of the Sunshine Coast.

The Wave: Building a Connected Future

Alongside the airport upgrades, planning is also progressing for The Wave, a proposed metro-style public transport corridor that will connect Birtinya to the Sunshine Coast Airport.

Early site investigations have begun to support planning and environmental assessments for this major infrastructure project.

The Wave is part of a broader regional transport strategy designed to improve mobility as the Sunshine Coast grows. The corridor will link key destinations including health precincts, employment hubs, and coastal communities, creating a more efficient and sustainable way for residents and visitors to travel across the region.

While the final details of the system are still being refined, the project is expected to deliver a modern transit solution that complements future rail connections and supports the region’s long-term development.

A Region Moving Forward

Taken together, these projects represent more than just infrastructure upgrade, they signal confidence in the Sunshine Coast’s future.

Investments in transport, connectivity, and visitor experiences are essential for supporting population growth, strengthening tourism, and creating new opportunities for local businesses.

For residents and investors alike, it’s clear that the Sunshine Coast is continuing to position itself as one of Australia’s most dynamic and livable regions.

And this is only the beginning of what’s ahead.
